01Dunlop Cry Baby Wah (GCB95 or similar)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Set in static position (toe-forward, around 2-3 o'clock on the sweep arc). Do not rock it; leave parked for the bright, cutting upper-mid emphasis that defines this tone.

Treadle Position 7

02DigiTech Whammy (4th/5th gen or Whammy DT)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Set to '+2 Oct' (Whammy mode). For the intro pitch sweep, rock from heel (original pitch) to toe (2 octaves up) during sustained notes. This is the 'rocket launch' sound.

Why these settings

The Champion 20 is a solid-state Fender with scooped, bright voicing — the opposite of the JCM 800's mid-forward bark. Gain pushed to 7 compensates for lower output from your Strat's single coils vs Morello's hot EMG 85. Mid maxed at 8 fights the Fender scoop to approximate Marshall midrange aggression. Bass dropped to 3 keeps low-end tight (Morello runs bass around 10 o'clock). Without the wah in static position, you will lack the characteristic upper-mid bite that makes this tone cut.

PRO TIPMorello's kill-switch stutter is impossible to replicate authentically without hardware modification, but you can approximate it by rapidly toggling your Strat's 5-way switch between bridge (full volume) and a middle position with volume rolled off — set your middle pickup's tone knob to 0 and use aggressive palm-muting to tighten the notes between stutters.
