01Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive
Used as a clean boost to cut sub-bass flub and push upper mids into the Marshall front end
02MXR Ten Band EQ
FX loop — tightens the low-end rumble and adds modern bite around 1k-2kHz
The Marshall DSL40CR on OD1 supplies plenty of saturation, so the SD-1 is used strictly as a classic metal tightener with Drive at 0 and Level high rather than stacking gain. The SG Special with mahogany body and bridge pickup has a warmer, rounder attack than De Micheli's bolt-on superstrat, which is compensated for by cutting sub-bass and bumping 1-2kHz on the MXR 10-Band EQ in the effects loop. Leave the MXR Fullbore Metal bypassed to prevent high-frequency fizzy buildup against the DSL's tube preamp.
