01Tube Screamer (TS9)
Pushing drive hard to approximate Big Muff sustain — roll Tone back to avoid fizz. This is a compromise; TS9 is mid-humped where Big Muff is scooped. For authenticity, a Big Muff clone is the correct tool.
02MXR Phase 90
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Set very slow (11 o'clock) for subtle swirl. Place after drive, before amp.
Original used a Big Muff into a clean Hiwatt — the Hiwatt is bright and neutral, while your DSL is mid-forward with more natural compression. I set the DSL to its cleanest mode with gain at 2 so the TS9 provides all the dirt. Boosted mids +1 vs original Hiwatt settings because your Les Paul humbuckers are darker and hotter than Gilmour's P-90s/single coils. Rolled treble back 1 to tame DSL's upper-mid bite. Your TS9 lacks the scooped, wall-of-fuzz character of a Big Muff — it will sound tighter and more aggressive in the mids.
