01Boss MT-2 Metal Zone or similar high-gain distortion
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This pedal is essential to reach Rectifier-level saturation. Set amp to cleanest voice with gain at 2-3 when using this pedal to avoid mud.
The Fender Champion 20 is a small solid-state practice amp that cannot produce Mesa Rectifier saturation from its preamp alone — even maxed, it stays in crunch territory. The amp has no mid or presence controls, only bass/treble. A high-gain distortion pedal is mandatory for this tone. When using the pedal, drop amp gain to 2-3 and let the pedal supply all the dirt. The Jazzmaster's single coils are brighter and lower output than Richard's EMGs, so I cut treble from the original's 8 down to 6 and kept bass high for the signature Rammstein low-end thump.
