01Tube Screamer style overdrive (TS9 / TS808 clone)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Critical for the midrange push and sustain on leads. Boss SD-1 or Behringer TO800 are budget alternatives.
The Champion 20 is a solid-state Fender with no mid control and a naturally scooped, bright voicing — the opposite of the mid-pushed JCM800. I've cranked gain to 8 to get as much grit as the amp allows, dropped bass to 4 to reduce Fender flub, and pushed treble to 7 for cut. Without a Tube Screamer, you'll lack the midrange thickness and singing sustain that defines this tone — the amp alone will sound thinner and buzzier than the original.
