01Boss MT-2 Metal Zone or similar high-gain distortion
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This is ESSENTIAL for this tone. The Champion 20 cannot produce thrash metal gain on its own. Run amp Voice selector to clean position with amp gain at 2-3 when using this pedal.
The Champion 20 has only bass and treble controls — no mid knob, no presence, no reverb on this model. Its solid-state overdrive voice maxes out at classic rock territory, nowhere near JCM800 thrash saturation. A dedicated high-gain distortion pedal is mandatory to reach this tone. With the recommended pedal, set amp to clean voice and low gain so the pedal handles all saturation without muddy stacking.
