01Boss DS-1 Distortion
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for this tone. The Champion 20's overdrive channel cannot produce 5150-level saturation. A DS-1 ($50 new) or Metal Zone MT-2 gets you in the ballpark. Run into the CLEAN channel with amp gain at 3.
The Fender Champion 20 is a practice solid-state amp with limited gain on tap — nowhere near 5150 territory. I maxed the amp's gain to extract every bit of dirt it has, but you need an external distortion pedal to achieve this tone properly. If you add the recommended DS-1, switch to the clean channel and set amp gain to 3 (pedal becomes your gain source). Mid is set lower than the 5150 original because Fender voicing is already scooped; treble is pushed to compensate for the Champion's darker overdrive circuit.
