01MXR El Grande Bass Fuzz (or similar fuzz with blend control)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for the intro/verse grind. Alternative: EHX Bass Big Muff with blend at 60-70%
The SVT's mid-forward grind gets you 60% of the way there without pedals, but the signature intro tone requires a fuzz with clean blend to preserve low-end punch. Set SVT gain low (2) since the fuzz provides all saturation — double-gain stacking will mud out the clank. The GK original was more scooped-modern; compensate by pulling mids up to 7 on the SVT to retain articulation. Your StingRay's active humbucker runs hotter than Duff's passive J-bass — this keeps the fuzz from oversaturating.
