01DigiTech Whammy (any version)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Set to '1 OCT DOWN' (Whammy position). Essential for the iconic bass-like riff. Without this pedal, the main riff cannot be replicated — play the riff one octave higher on guitar as a workaround, but it loses the sub-octave weight.
02Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Engaged ONLY for the slide solo section. Place after Whammy in chain.
The GA-10 is a small solid-state practice amp with limited headroom — it cannot replicate the Silvertone's raw tube breakup. Gain at 6 pushes the preamp into mild grit territory, which is as close as this amp gets. Treble stays at 7 to preserve the jangly, thin character of White's cheap hollowbody; your Tanglewood's single coils are actually well-suited to this. Without the Whammy pedal, this tone is fundamentally incomplete — that octave-down effect IS the song.
