01Ibanez Tube Screamer (TS9 or TS808)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This is essential to the tone. SRV ran the TS as a clean boost (low drive, high level) to push mids and drive the amp's front end. Without it, the DSL will sound too British and lack the woody mid-push. A TS9, TS Mini, or any TS clone will work.

Why these settings

The DSL40CR is mid-forward and naturally darker than SRV's scooped Fender Vibroverb. I dropped mids to 4 (vs Fender's 6-7) to prevent honk, and boosted bass to 7 to recover the fat Fender low-end the Marshall lacks. Using Classic Gain green channel keeps the voicing cleaner and more Fender-like than the Ultra Gain channel. Without the Tube Screamer, you're missing the critical mid-push that defines this tone.

PRO TIPSRV's secret was his .013 gauge strings tuned down to Eb — the heavy strings gave massive low-end thump and sustain while the half-step down kept tension playable. Your SRV Strat likely has .011s stock; going to .012s or .013s in Eb will get you significantly closer to that percussive attack and woody sustain.
