RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Champion 20 lacks the natural power-tube breakup of a cranked Marshall. A mid-hump overdrive pedal is essential to achieve Frampton's singing sustain and warm compression. Without this, the tone will be thin and lack sustain.
The original tone came from a non-master-volume Marshall cranked to full — pure power tube saturation. The Champion 20 is a solid-state practice amp with no tube breakup, so we rely on the Tweed voice and moderate gain to fake warmth, plus the recommended OD pedal for sustain and compression. Tone knob rolled to 7 tames Strat ice-pick highs; volume at 8 lets the amp breathe while maintaining clarity Frampton achieved by backing off his guitar volume.
