Floods amp settings — Laney LH50

The Pantera guitar tone for “Floods”, dialed in for a Laney LH50 with a Ibanez GIO GRG170DX. Studio version, The Great Southern Trendkill (1996)

Original rig

Randall RG-100 solid-state head, Washburn Dimebag signature guitar with Bill Lawrence L-500XL bridge pickup, Furman PQ-3 parametric EQ, MXR 6-band graphic EQ (both as front-end boost/shaping), Boss noise gate, Dunlop Cry Baby wah (parked at 'hot spot' for lead tone)

Tight, scooped, aggressive high-gain lead with searing upper-mid cut and surgical note definition — the iconic Dimebag 'buzzsaw meets singing sustain' solo voice

Use as a clean boost / EQ shaper into the amp's drive channel — replicates Dimebag's PQ-3 + MXR 6-band front-end push. Low drive, high level tightens the attack and adds pick definition without muddying the amp's gain.

Why these settings

The Laney LH50 is a tube head with more midrange warmth than Dimebag's solid-state Randall RG-100. Scoop the mid harder (2) to approximate the Randall's cold, scooped character. The LH50's EL34 power section adds natural compression the Randall lacked — compensate by keeping gain at 7 rather than maxing it. Your GIO's Infinity R pickups are lower output than the L-500XL, so the OD100 as a boost recovers that front-end push.

PRO TIPDimebag parked his wah at a fixed 'hot spot' (roughly 60-70% heel-up) during the Floods solo for that vocal, cutting lead tone — if you have any wah, leave it engaged and stationary at that position rather than sweeping it. No wah? Roll your tone knob to 7-8 to approximate the upper-mid peak.
