01Boss DS-1 Distortion
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This pedal is essential; Cobain's entire dirty sound came from the DS-1, not amp gain. A DS-1 clone or Behringer DO400 ($25) gets you 90% there.
02Electro-Harmonix Small Clone Chorus
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Used on clean verses and layered with DS-1 on pre-chorus. A Behringer CC300 or Joyo Classic Chorus is a budget substitute.
The Champion 25 is a bright, Fender-voiced solid-state amp with limited natural breakup—actually ideal here since Cobain ran clean. Mids pushed to 7 compensates for the Fender scoop and matches the Mesa's mid-forward Rhythm channel setting (original: Mid 8). Treble dropped to 5 because the Champion's treble is harsher than the Mesa's tube warmth. Without a DS-1, you cannot authentically replicate this tone; the amp's gain alone will sound fizzy and thin, not chunky.
