Why these settings

The Champion 25 is a bright, Fender-voiced solid-state amp with limited natural breakup—actually ideal here since Cobain ran clean. Mids pushed to 7 compensates for the Fender scoop and matches the Mesa's mid-forward Rhythm channel setting (original: Mid 8). Treble dropped to 5 because the Champion's treble is harsher than the Mesa's tube warmth. Without a DS-1, you cannot authentically replicate this tone; the amp's gain alone will sound fizzy and thin, not chunky.

PRO TIPCobain's attack was sloppy and aggressive—dig in hard with downstrokes on the main riff and let open strings ring sloppily into the next chord. The 'grunge' sound is partly technique: loose fretting, pick scraping the low E, and not muting perfectly. Roll your tone knob to 7 to tame the Strat's bridge pickup ice-pick on the distorted sections.
