01Distortion Pedal (RECOMMENDED — Boss DS-1 or similar)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Champion 20's solid-state gain cannot replicate Mesa tube saturation. A distortion pedal is essential to achieve the tight, aggressive character. Run the amp cleaner (gain 4) when using this pedal.
The original Mesa Mark IIC+ delivers scooped, compressed high-gain from preamp tubes — the Champion 20's solid-state circuit lacks this saturation and compression. I maxed the amp's gain and scooped mids to 3 (vs the original's 4-4.5) because the Fender voicing is already mid-scooped. Your Les Paul's passive humbuckers are warmer and lower output than Hetfield's active EMG 81s, so treble stays at 7 to retain clarity. Without a distortion pedal, this gets you in the ballpark but will lack the tight, saturated chunk of the original.
