01Overdrive Pedal (TS-style or Boss SD-1)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential to achieve the sustaining, compressed overdrive Slash gets from a cranked Marshall. The Frontman 10G is a solid-state practice amp with limited gain and no natural breakup. Without a drive pedal, you will get a thin, fizzy distortion rather than the thick singing tone. A Boss SD-1, Ibanez TS9, or any budget TS clone (Joyo Vintage Overdrive, Behringer TO800) will transform this amp.
The Frontman 10G is a 10-watt solid-state amp with a scooped, bright voicing and no tube compression — the polar opposite of Slash's cranked Marshall. Gain is maxed because this amp's overdrive is weak and thin. Mids are maxed to counteract the Fender scoop (original Marshall mids were 7-8). Treble is dropped to 4 because the Strat's single coils are already brighter than Slash's humbuckers, and the Frontman's treble is harsh at high gain. Bass raised to 7 to add warmth the Strat lacks. Without an overdrive pedal, this will sound buzzy and undefined — the recommended pedal is critical to get anywhere close.
