01Overdrive (TS-style clone)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential to get cranked-Plexi saturation from the Champion 20. A Boss SD-1, Ibanez TS9, or any affordable TS clone will work. Without this pedal, the Champion's solid-state gain section will sound thin and fizzy at high settings rather than warm and compressed like Kossoff's tone.
The Champion 20 is a solid-state Fender — it cannot replicate power-tube compression from a cranked Plexi on its own. Gain maxed gives you grit but not the warm, singing sustain Kossoff had. The recommended OD pedal provides that midrange push and compression. Your Strat's single coils are brighter and thinner than Kossoff's PAF humbuckers, so I moved to neck pickup with tone rolled to 6 for warmth, cut treble from 6→4, and boosted mids from 5→7 to compensate for the Fender's scooped voicing and the Strat's inherent brightness.
