RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for this tone. Run into amp input. Use as clean boost to tighten low end and add gain saturation the RockJam cannot produce alone. Without this pedal, the tone will be thin and fizzy rather than tight and chunky.

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Place after overdrive, before amp. Keeps palm-muted passages tight and eliminates hiss between notes. At max gain on a small amp, noise becomes a real problem.

Why these settings

The original uses a 7-string through a high-gain preamp/power amp rig producing massive, scooped saturation. The RockJam MG 10 is a 10W solid-state practice amp with limited gain and headroom — it cannot physically replicate Carpenter's crushing low end or tight saturation. Mids dropped to 2 replicates the scooped character; gain maxed extracts every bit of distortion available; bass boosted to 7 compensates for the Strat's thinner single-coil output vs the original's hot humbucker. An overdrive pedal used as a clean boost is essential to get anywhere close — without it, expect a fuzzy approximation rather than the percussive chug.

PRO TIPTune down to Drop D or Drop C if your strings allow — the lowest tuning your Strat can handle without excessive flop. Palm mute hard, directly over the bridge saddles, and attack the strings aggressively with a thick pick (1mm+). The percussive 'chug' comes from right-hand precision, not just amp settings. Roll tone knob to 8 to tame the Strat's ice-pick highs that become harsh at max gain.
