RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Frontman 20G cannot produce high-gain saturation from its preamp; a distortion pedal is mandatory for this tone. DS-1 is affordable (~$50) and gets the aggressive, mid-forward character. Run amp gain at 3 or below when using this pedal.

Why these settings

The Frontman 20G is a 20W solid-state practice amp with no mid knob, no presence, and no reverb—those are set to null. Its preamp cannot reach Bogner/Rectifier saturation even at max gain; the amp settings above represent the closest clean-platform EQ shape (bass pulled back vs original 6 to tighten the small speaker, treble moderate to avoid fizz). The actual distortion MUST come from an external pedal—without one, this tone is unreachable.

PRO TIPTune to Drop D and palm-mute hard directly over the bridge pickup pole pieces—the Invader's tight attack on the original comes from aggressive right-hand technique as much as the amp. Roll tone to 8 to tame the GRG170DX's slightly harsh INF bridge humbucker.
