RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for this tone; the Frontman's gain alone is too fizzy and lacks the midrange push. A TS9, TS Mini, or Joyo Vintage Overdrive ($30) gets you there. Level high, Drive low — use it as a clean boost into mild amp grit.

Why these settings

The Frontman 20G is a solid-state practice amp with a scooped, bright voicing — the opposite of Frusciante's warm Marshall/Fender tube compression. Your SG's humbuckers are darker and hotter than his Tele's single coils. To compensate: mid pushed to 7 (vs original's 5-6) to recover the cut; treble dropped to 4 to tame the Frontman's harsh top end; bass at 6 (not 10) because the SG already delivers low-end thump the Tele lacked. Gain at 4 provides the riff's controlled grit without fizz. Without the recommended overdrive pedal, this tone will lack the midrange honk and compression that defines the track.

PRO TIPFrusciante's right-hand attack is everything here — he picks hard directly over the bridge pickup pole pieces for that aggressive snap, then backs off dynamically for the softer chord stabs. Practice the 16th-note muting with your fretting hand barely lifting off the strings; the percussive 'chk' sound is half the tone.
