01MXR Six-Band Graphic EQ (M109)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This pedal is essential to the Dimebag tone; it creates the V-curve scoop that defines groove metal. Run it BEFORE the amp input. Without it, you lose 40% of the character. A Behringer EQ700 or Boss GE-7 works as a budget substitute.
02Noise Gate (any basic model)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Dimebag's dead-silent stops between riffs are half the sound. A Donner Noise Killer or Boss NS-2 will do. Place after the EQ, before the amp.
The Cube 40GX is a modeling amp with digital voicings — it lacks the raw solid-state attack of the Randall RG100ES, which delivered Dimebag's trademark tightness. Compensate by dropping mids to 2 (the Cube's mid circuit is voiced higher than the Randall's) and pushing treble to 8 for definition. Your Epiphone SG's Alnico Classic humbuckers are warmer and lower-output than the L-500XL's ceramic aggression, so gain goes to 8 instead of the Randall's ~7. Without the MXR EQ pedal, you will not achieve the true V-curve scoop — the amp's 3-band EQ cannot cut 400-800Hz surgically enough.
