01MXR M109 6-Band EQ (RECOMMENDED — not owned)

RECOMMENDED — not owned. Critical for Dimebag's 'frown' EQ curve. Place before amp input. Boosts gain staging and shapes the scooped-but-punchy character.

100Hz 3 · 200Hz 4 · 400Hz 8 · 800Hz 10 · 1.6kHz 5 · 3.2kHz 4

02High-gain distortion pedal (RECOMMENDED — not owned)

RECOMMENDED — not owned. A Boss MT-2 Metal Zone, MXR Super Badass, or ProCo RAT will get you into the ballpark. The Hot Rod Deluxe drive channel alone cannot reach Dimebag's saturation levels.

Why these settings

The Hot Rod Deluxe is a tube amp voiced for American cleans and blues breakup—it lacks the tight, aggressive solid-state saturation of Dimebag's Randall. I've pushed the drive channel harder than typical and scooped mids less aggressively (4 instead of 3) because Fenders are already mid-scooped. Without an external distortion pedal and EQ, you'll get a warm crunch but not the razor-tight metal attack. Your Les Paul's humbuckers are warmer than Dimebag's hot XL-500s, so I've raised presence to compensate.

PRO TIPFor the clean intro sections, switch to the clean channel with gain at 3, roll your guitar volume to 6, and use the neck pickup with tone at 5—this approximates the dynamic contrast Dimebag achieved before the heavy sections explode.
