Cemetery Gates amp settings — Vox Pathfinder 10

The Pantera guitar tone for “Cemetery Gates”, dialed in for a Vox Pathfinder 10 with a Harley Benton Telecaster. Studio version, Cowboys From Hell (1990) — distorted riff/verse sections, not the clean intro

Original rig

Dean ML 'Dean From Hell' with Bill Lawrence L-500XL bridge pickup → MXR Six-Band EQ (V-scoop) → Randall RG100ES solid-state amp (distortion channel). Clean intro used Roland JC-120.

Tight, aggressive, scooped-mid metal crunch with razor treble and solid low-end thump — the quintessential '90s groove metal attack

01Pocketmaster (Tube Screamer-style overdrive)

This pedal IS your gain source. Crank drive hard — the Pathfinder stays clean, the Pocketmaster provides all the dirt. Tone rolled up to compensate for the Tele's brightness being different from Dime's hot ceramic humbucker.

Why these settings

The Pathfinder 10 is a single-channel clean amp with no dirt — amp gain stays at 2 (just past clean) while the Pocketmaster handles all distortion. Dimebag's tone was heavily mid-scooped via external EQ, so I've dropped mids to 3 (the Pathfinder is already slightly scooped like most Vox-voiced amps). Your Telecaster's single-coil bridge is bright and thin compared to Dime's hot humbucker, so bass is pushed to 7 and tone knob rolled to 8 to add body. This will get you in the ballpark, but the Pathfinder's 10-watt speaker and clean headroom mean it won't have the chest-punch of a cranked Randall stack.

PRO TIPDimebag's pick attack was violent and precise — use a thick pick (1.0mm+), anchor your palm lightly on the bridge for tight muting, and dig in hard on the downstrokes. The tone is as much in the hands as the gear.
