Why these settings

The MG15R is a solid-state amp without the tight low-end compression of the Mesa Mark IIC+. I pushed mids to 6 (vs the original's more scooped studio sound) because the MG lacks natural midrange authority—this compensates. Bass is held at 4 to prevent flub on palm mutes; the Mesa's tight voicing handles more bass without getting muddy. Reverb at 0—the Black Album rhythm tracks are bone dry.

PRO TIPYour Jackson's pickups are hotter than vintage PAFs but cooler than EMGs. Palm mute directly over the bridge saddles (not further back) and pick with downstrokes only on the main riff—this replicates Hetfield's attack and keeps the tone tight rather than flabby.
