Basket Case amp settings — Marshall Mg15r

The Green Day guitar tone for “Basket Case”, dialed in for a Marshall Mg15r with a Westfield. LesPaul. Studio version, Dookie (1994), Fantasy Studios recording

Original rig

Fernandes RST-50 'Blue' (Bill Lawrence L-500XL bridge humbucker) → Marshall 1959 SLP Plexi 'Pete' with Dookie Mod (cascaded gain mod by Martin Golub), Marshall 1960A 4x12 cab, no pedals

Crunchy, punchy midrange-forward tone with surprising clarity and articulation — less gain than expected, bite comes from picking attack

01Boss DS-1

Use as primary gain source to compensate for MG15R's solid-state OD channel lacking the Plexi's harmonic richness. Keep Dist moderate — the original tone is NOT heavily saturated. Level at 7 pushes the amp's front end for tightness.

Tone 5 · Level 7 · Dist 4
Why these settings

The MG15R's OD channel is harsher and fizzier than a Plexi's tube saturation, so the DS-1 handles the dirt while the amp stays cleaner (gain 6 instead of cranked). Mid pushed to 7 compensates for the MG's tendency toward scooped voicing vs the Plexi's natural midrange bark. Your Les Paul's humbuckers are hotter than the original L-500XL, so DS-1 Dist stays at 4 to avoid mud. Tone knob at 8 (not 10) tames your LP's darker voicing to get closer to the Strat-style brightness of the original.

PRO TIPThe Dookie tone is ALL about aggressive downstroke picking with your wrist locked — the clarity and punch come from attack dynamics, not gain. Palm-mute slightly looser than you think, and hit the strings hard with the pick angled slightly toward the bridge for that snappy 'chug' on the verses.
