01DigiTech Whammy (or pitch shifter)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for the 'bass' riff sound. Without this, the riff will be one octave higher than the record.

Mode 1 octave down · Mix/Blend 10

02Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Engages only for the slide solo. Without it, use amp gain cranked to 8 for the solo section.

Volume 6 · Tone 7 · Sustain 9
Why these settings

The Peavey Studio Pro 110 is a solid-state amp with a tighter, more clinical response than White's raw tube Silvertone. Push the gain higher (6 vs original's natural tube breakup at volume 6) to compensate for the lack of tube sag and harmonic compression. Mid boosted to 7 because the Peavey is inherently flatter than the mid-forward Silvertone, and treble pulled back to 5 to avoid the solid-state harshness the Silvertone's speakers naturally rolled off.

PRO TIPUse neck pickup with tone rolled to 6 to approximate the dark, woolly DeArmond single-coil on the Kay. Dig in hard with your pick near the neck for that sloppy, garage-rock attack—White's tone is 50% aggressive right-hand dynamics. Without a Whammy pedal, play the riff one octave higher and accept it won't sound like the record's 'bass' line.
