The Hot Rod Deluxe IV is an open-back tube guitar combo, so running high gain and heavy bass through its 12-inch guitar speaker will cause muddy flub; keep bass at 4 and lean heavily on the Drive channel at gain 6 with mids pushed to 8 to mimic the Peavey Pro 500 preamp grind. The P-Bass split-coil delivers solid low-mids, but keep your tone wide open at 9-10 to retain the top-end fret attack Paul Gray got from his ATK triple-coil. If you add a dedicated bass overdrive/preamp pedal like a SansAmp, switch the amp to Clean (gain 2) and let the pedal supply the dirt.
