Comfort amp settings — Fender Blues Junior IV

The Pink guitar tone for “Comfort”, dialed in for a Fender Blues Junior IV with a Gibson Les Paul Studio. Studio version, The Wall (1979) — second solo specifically

Original rig

1969 Fender Stratocaster with DiMarzio FS-1 bridge pickup → MXR Dyna Comp → Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi (Ram's Head era) → Hiwatt DR103 100W (channels linked, gain near-clean) with WEM 4x12 cab + Yamaha RA-200 rotating speaker in parallel. Delay added in mixing (Maestro Echoplex).

Singing, vocal-like lead tone with endless sustain. Big Muff provides all the saturation; Hiwatt stays clean to preserve note definition. Warm, throaty midrange with smooth high-end roll-off.

01Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi

This is your gain source. Amp must stay clean. Original used Ram's Head version with Tone at 6, Sustain at 6, Volume at 4 — adjusted Volume up because Les Paul humbuckers are hotter than Gilmour's FS-1 Strat pickup.

Why these settings

Gilmour's Hiwatt ran near-clean with massive headroom; your Blues Junior breaks up earlier and has a scooped Fender voicing. Dropped gain to 2 (amp stays clean — Big Muff is the saturation source). Pushed mid +1 vs original Hiwatt settings to compensate for Fender's mid-scoop. Your Les Paul's humbuckers are warmer and hotter than his Strat's FS-1, so use neck pickup with tone rolled to 7 to approximate his bridge+neck Strat blend and avoid mud.

PRO TIPGilmour's sustain comes from stacking compression (Dyna Comp) before the Muff — if you lack a compressor, dig in harder with your pick attack on held notes and let the Muff's sustain bloom naturally. Play closer to the neck for a fatter fundamental.
