01MXR Six-Band Graphic EQ (M109)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This is essential for the Dimebag scoop. Run before amp input. Creates the signature V-curve that defines this tone.
02Noise Gate (ISP Decimator or Boss NS-2)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Dimebag used a Rocktron Guitar Silencer. Critical for the dead-silent stops between riffs. Set threshold high enough to kill hiss but not choke sustain.
The Ironheart is a tube amp with natural compression—Dimebag's Randall was solid-state with zero compression, giving tighter transients. Compensate by keeping gain at 7 (not maxed) to preserve pick definition, and scoop mids harder than you'd expect (3) to approximate the V-curve. The Ironheart's EL34 voicing adds midrange warmth the Randall lacked, so the low mid setting is deliberate. Without the graphic EQ pedal, you'll get 70% of the tone; with it, you'll nail the surgical scoop.
