RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This pedal is non-negotiable for this tone. The Deluxe Reverb cannot produce high-gain distortion on its own. The SD-1 provides the Marshall-style midrange grind and saturation. A Tube Screamer (TS9) or EHX Soul Food are acceptable substitutes.

Why these settings

The Fender Deluxe Reverb is a clean-platform amp with scooped mids — the opposite of Zakk's mid-forward JCM800. Without an overdrive pedal, this tone is unachievable. I set the amp to clean (gain 3) to let the SD-1 be the sole gain source, pushed mids and bass +1-2 vs the original to compensate for Fender's natural scoop, and cut treble -1 because Fenders are brighter than Marshalls. Your Strat's single coils are lower output and brighter than his EMG-loaded Les Paul — rolling the tone knob to 7 fattens the bridge pickup slightly.

PRO TIPDig in hard with your pick right over the bridge pickup — Zakk's attack is aggressive and precise. Palm-mute tightly on the low strings for that chunky 'Tears' riff, then release fully for the sustained power chords. The dynamic contrast between muted and open is where the tone lives.
