Signal chain

01Korg AX-1000G — Distortion Block (MXR Dist+ emulation or 'OD-1' type)

This is the primary gain source. Set amp gain LOW (3) because the pedal provides the saturation. Select the smoothest overdrive/distortion model available — avoid modern high-gain or metal voicings.

02Korg AX-1000G — EQ Block (Parametric or Graphic)

Critical for Rhoads' midrange bark. Boost 500Hz and 1kHz by +3-4dB, slight cut at 250Hz to tighten low-mids. Place AFTER the distortion block in signal chain.

500Hz 7 · 1kHz 7 · 250Hz 4 · 4kHz 5

03Korg AX-1000G — Chorus Block

Optional — use only for solo shimmer. Keep subtle. Recording was dry multi-tracked rhythm, but Randy used chorus live for thickness.

Why these settings

The Yamaha GA-15 is a solid-state practice amp with limited headroom and no channel switching — it cannot replicate Marshall power tube saturation. The Korg AX-1000G must supply ALL the gain and EQ shaping; the amp is set clean with mid pushed to 7 to compensate for its naturally flat voicing vs the Marshall's mid-forward character. Treble dropped to 6 because solid-state amps get harsh where tubes compress.

PRO TIPRandy's attack came from aggressive downstrokes with the pick angled slightly. Dig in hard on the low strings and let the Distortion+ compress the note — the tone blooms after the initial pick attack. Roll your guitar's tone knob to 8 to tame any fizz from the solid-state response.
