01Fuzz (Big Muff style or Fuzz Face — RECOMMENDED)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The ZVex Fuzz Factory is unique (gated, sputtering), but a Big Muff or EHX Op-Amp Big Muff gets the thick sustain. A Behringer SF300 (~$25) is a budget Fuzz Factory clone. Without a fuzz, this tone is unobtainable — amp gain alone will sound thin and wrong.

02DigiTech Whammy (or pitch shifter — RECOMMENDED)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Set to +1 octave (heel-down position). The Whammy is 50% of this riff's identity — the screaming octave-up. A Donner Harmonic Square or Mooer Pitch Box are budget alternatives. Mode '0' here represents the +1 Oct setting.

Why these settings

Your Squier Sonic Strat HT has single coils — lower output and brighter than Bellamy's high-output humbuckers. I raised treble to 7 and mid to 6 to compensate for the thinner low-mids of single coils, and dropped amp gain to 3 because the fuzz pedal is the gain source (stacking amp dirt + fuzz = mud). The Catalyst's Chime channel has a Plexi-adjacent top-end sparkle that lets fuzz harmonics bloom. Without a fuzz pedal, you cannot achieve this tone — the amp's onboard distortion is the wrong character entirely.

PRO TIPThe riff is played with aggressive downstrokes and palm-muting release — dig in hard on the attack, then lift your palm slightly to let the fuzz sustain sing. Roll your guitar's tone knob to 6-7 if the high end gets ice-picky on the Strat bridge pickup.
