Your EC-1000's EMG 81 is hotter and more compressed than his passive Dirty Fingers, so gain is dropped from the original 8-8.5 to 7, and bass is pulled to 5 (from 6) to prevent low-end mud from the active pickup's tighter response. Mids stay scooped at 3 for that classic thrash scoop.

PRO TIPPalm mute directly over the bridge saddles, not further up the strings — this is how Hetfield gets that machine-gun tightness on the main riff's gallop without losing note definition.
