01Tube Screamer (TS9) or similar boost
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for tightening low-end and adding pick attack clarity. A Boss SD-1 or Maxon OD808 clone works equally well.
02Noise Gate
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Critical for tight palm-mute stops and eliminating high-gain hiss between riffs.
The MG30CFX's OD channels are voiced brighter and fizzier than a 5150/6505. Mids are set at 4 rather than the typical 3-scoop because the MG lacks the low-mid girth of a tube high-gain head—this prevents the tone from becoming thin. Gain at 7 is sufficient; higher creates mud. Without a Tube Screamer to tighten the front end, palm mutes will sound looser than the recording.
