01Tube Screamer (TS9 or TS808)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Critical for this tone: the TS808 tightens the low end and adds midrange focus that defines Hetfield's palm-mute attack. Run drive near minimum, level high — it's a clean boost, not a distortion source. Without this pedal, the tone will be looser and less defined.

Why these settings

Your Mini Jubilee is voiced closer to the JCM800 power section Hetfield actually used, which is fortunate. However, your Strat's single coils are drastically different from EMG 81s — lower output, brighter, less compressed. I dropped bass from the original 6-7 to 5 (single coils don't need as much low-end cut), raised treble to 7 to compensate for the Jubilee's darker voicing vs the Mark IIC+ preamp, and kept mids scooped at 3 for the signature V-curve. The TS pedal is non-negotiable for this tone — it replaces the compression and tightness the EMGs naturally provide.

PRO TIPTune to Eb standard. Use exclusively downpicked palm mutes with your pick angled slightly so the edge attacks the string — this creates the percussive 'chunk' that defines Hetfield's rhythm style. Your Strat will never fully replicate EMG compression, but aggressive right-hand technique closes the gap more than any EQ tweak.
