Why these settings

The Fender Twin is a clean platform amp with no preamp gain — it cannot produce thrash distortion without pedals. Amp gain set to 3 keeps the Twin clean; all saturation comes from the recommended DS-1. Mid at 3 compensates for the Twin's naturally scooped voicing (the Mesa IIC+ is mid-forward before the V-curve EQ). Treble dropped from the original's 6-7 to 5 because single-coil Strats are brighter than Hetfield's humbuckers.

PRO TIPHetfield's tone lives in his right hand: aggressive, consistent downstrokes with the pick angled slightly and striking close to the bridge. Palm-mute pressure should be firm but not choked. Without this technique, no gear combination will sound like Master of Puppets.
