Why these settings

Your Squier Sonic has single coils — lower output and brighter than the original's hot humbuckers. Bass dropped to 5 (from 6) to prevent flabbiness from the single coil's thinner low end, mids cut to 2 for the classic scoop, and presence raised to 7 to compensate for the single coil's lack of midrange punch. Gain pushed to 8 because single coils need more amp saturation to achieve the same chunk.

PRO TIPPalm mute aggressively right at the bridge saddles — Hetfield's right hand position is critical to that tight, percussive chug. Single coils will sound thinner no matter what; if it's too ice-picky, roll your guitar's tone knob to 7.
