01Boss DS-1 Distortion
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Frontman 10G cannot produce singing Marshall-style sustain on its own. A DS-1 ($50 new) will get you the mid-forward saturation this solo needs. Set amp gain to 3 if using this pedal.
The Frontman 10G is a solid-state practice amp with scooped, bright voicing — the opposite of a cranked Marshall's warm mid-bark. I pushed mid to 8 (vs original's 6.5) to compensate for the Fender scoop, dropped treble to 5 to tame solid-state harshness, and maxed gain because this amp's drive is weak and thin compared to tube saturation. Without a pedal, you will get an approximation but not the sustain. Your Les Paul Classic with its humbuckers is close to Slash's rig — the neck pickup rolled to tone 7 warms the attack.
