01Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive (or similar TS-style)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Champion 40's overdrive channel cannot reach the cascaded-gain saturation of the Dookie Mod. An SD-1 or TS9 into a cleaner amp setting replicates the tight, mid-focused push. Run amp gain at 3-4 if using this pedal.
The Champion 40 has no mid or presence controls — only bass/treble. Fender voicing is naturally scooped compared to the mid-forward Plexi, so treble is pulled back from the original's ~8.5 to 6 to avoid ice-pick highs, and bass is reduced from 5.5 to 4 to tighten the looser Fender low-end. The Champion's overdrive channel tops out at a bluesy crunch, not cascaded Plexi saturation — an overdrive pedal is strongly recommended to hit the Dookie aggression. Your GRG170DX's Infinity humbuckers are hotter than the L-500XL, so gain stays moderate.
