01Boss DS-1 Distortion

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Champion 50XL overdrive channel lacks the saturation depth of a Dual Rectifier. A DS-1 ($50 new) stacked into the dirty channel gets you the sustained, compressed chunk of the original. Without this pedal, max out amp gain to 10 and accept a thinner tone.

Why these settings

The original Mesa Rectifier has massive low-end and a scooped-then-boosted mid character the Champion cannot replicate natively. I pushed amp mid to 8 (vs original 6) to compensate for the Champion's scooped Fender voicing, dropped bass to 4 (vs original 6) because the Champion's bass shelf is lower and muddier at high gain, and cut treble to 6 (vs original 7.5) because Fender amps get ice-picky in the overdrive channel. Reverb is 0 — the original is bone dry.

PRO TIPGrohl's attack is critical — he picks hard and lets the strings breathe between downstrokes. Tune to Drop D, dig in with a thick pick (1mm+), and palm-mute the open D string aggressively on the main riff. Roll your tone knob to 8 to tame the Ibanez's bright ceramic humbuckers without losing cut.
