01Big Muff Pi (or any Big Muff clone — EHX Op-Amp, Russian, Nano)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This is non-negotiable for the Mascis wall-of-fuzz sound. The EHX Big Muff Pi Nano ($80-90) or Op-Amp Big Muff ($90) will get you there. Without it, this tone is unobtainable.
Your Gretsch's Filter'Tron humbuckers are warmer and higher output than Mascis' Jazzmaster single-coils, so I dropped bass from 6 to 4 and pushed treble from 4 to 6 to recover the bite. The Champion 50XL is a clean-platform amp like his Twin Reverb, which is correct — keep gain low because the Big Muff IS the distortion. Without a Big Muff, you will not achieve this tone; the amp's onboard drive cannot replicate that sustained fuzz wall.
