Roman Holiday amp settings — Mooer GE100

The Fontaines D.C. guitar tone for “Roman Holiday”, dialed in for a Mooer GE100 with a Ibanez GIO GRG170DX. Studio version, Skinty Fia (2022) — recorded with producer Dan Carey

Original rig

Mid-'60s Fender Mustang (22.5" scale) or Martin J12-15 12-string → Fender '68 Custom Twin Reverb (vintage channel, bright switch ON) + Fender '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb for added body. Key pedals: Moose Electronics reverb (placed FIRST in chain, unconventionally), MXR Micro Amp for sparkle/boost, Ceriatone Centura (Klon-style), Moose Electronics Cosmic Tremorlo

Jangly, shimmery clean with hi-hat-like chime — reverb-into-drive creates a snare-in-huge-room quality. Trebly, percussive attack with rhythmic tremolo pulses

01Reverb Block (Hall or Spring)

Place FIRST in chain before any drive — this is O'Connell's signature unconventional routing that creates the 'dirty reverb' snare-in-a-room sound

Mix/Level 6 · Decay/Time 5 · Tone 7

02Boost/Overdrive Block (Tube Screamer or Clean Boost type)

Mimics MXR Micro Amp pushing the Twin — set for clean boost with treble emphasis, not distortion

Drive/Gain 2 · Tone 7 · Level 7

03Tremolo Block

Sine wave tremolo, moderate pulse — not choppy, just rhythmic shimmer underneath

Rate/Speed 5 · Depth 4 · Wave 0
Why these settings

Your GE100 is a multi-FX unit — select a Fender Twin or clean American amp model as your base. The original uses a pristine Fender clean with the bright switch, so push treble higher than you'd expect (7) and keep gain minimal (2). The GRG170DX's humbuckers are hotter than O'Connell's Mustang single coils, so I dropped gain by 1 and kept tone knob at 8 rather than 10 to tame harshness. The KEY to this tone is reverb-before-drive — set up your effect chain in that order on the GE100.

PRO TIPO'Connell thinks of guitar as 'an extension of the drum kit' — play with a percussive, clipped picking attack near the bridge, letting the tremolo and reverb create the sustain rather than holding notes. The chime comes from short, sharp strums that ring out into the wet signal.
