Why these settings

The Stranger C15 is an unrecognized small practice amp—knob names may differ on your faceplate. It lacks the gain structure of a Mesa or Marshall rack rig, so a distortion pedal is mandatory for this tone. Your Epiphone Les Paul's humbuckers are hotter than the original JB pickups, so the pedal's gain can stay at 7 rather than maxed. Roll tone knob to 7 to tame the Les Paul's brightness and get closer to Carpenter's dark chunk. Set amp nearly clean (gain 2-3) to avoid mud from double-gain stacking.

PRO TIPPalm-mute hard and pick aggressively right over the bridge pickup pole pieces—Carpenter's percussive attack is half the tone. The riff's swing comes from the syncopation, not sustain, so keep notes short and let the silence between hits breathe.
