01Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz (or HM-2 / RAT as substitute)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz is discontinued; a Boss HM-2 clone, ProCo RAT, or EHX Big Muff with mids boosted gets close. This pedal adds the gritty harmonic content that makes the tone cut. Run into amp's clean-ish gain setting.

Why these settings

Your JCM800 2203 is the power-amp section's cousin — you're closer than most. The ADA MP-1 was mid-scooped and aggressive, so I've dropped mid to 3 (vs the 2203's natural mid-forward bark). Your Strat's single-coils have less low-end thump and output than Carpenter's JB humbuckers — I've compensated with bass +1 and kept gain at 8. Without a fuzz or high-gain pedal, you'll get 70% of the grind but miss the upper-octave grit that defines the tone.

PRO TIPCarpenter's picking hand sits near the bridge with a heavy attack straight down into the strings — the 'chug' articulation comes from muting hard and striking percussively, not from sloppy palm mutes. On a Strat, angle your bridge pickup selector slightly toward the middle position if the tone gets too thin on the low C# string.
