01Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi (or any fuzz/distortion)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This pedal is essential for the Zombie tone. A Boss DS-1, ProCo RAT, or any Big Muff clone will get you close. Without it, the Frontman's onboard gain will be thin and fizzy rather than thick and fuzzy.

Volume 7 · Tone 4 · Sustain 6

02Chorus pedal (Boss CE-5, MXR Analog Chorus, or similar)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Chorus is always on for this tone. Place after the fuzz. A cheap Donner or Joyo chorus will work.

Rate 3 · Depth 4 · Level 7
Why these settings

The Frontman 10G is a solid-state practice amp with no presence control and limited gain character. The original Marshall 6101 is a tube combo with rich mids and spongy compression. Your Epiphone SG's humbuckers are hotter and warmer than the original Telecaster single coils, so I dropped treble from the original 7 to 5 and pulled bass from 6 to 4 to avoid mud. Gain is pushed to 8 to compensate for the Frontman's weaker saturation, but without a fuzz pedal in front, you will not achieve the thick, wooly distortion character of the recording.

PRO TIPRoll your SG's tone knob to 6 and dig in hard with your pick near the bridge—the attack is percussive and aggressive on the original. If you cannot get a fuzz pedal, try running the amp gain at 10 and backing off your guitar volume to 7 for a slightly more compressed, less harsh breakup.
