01Tube Screamer style overdrive (TS9 or clone)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for pushing the AC15 into usable high-gain territory and adding mid-focus. Without this pedal, the tone will be thin and lack sustain.

02Digital Delay (Boss DD-3 or similar)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Set to approximately 350-400ms for the solo's trailing repeats. Run into amp input since AC15 has no FX loop.

Why these settings

The AC15 is a Class A amp with chimey cleans — the opposite of the Uberschall's saturated high-gain voicing. The AC15 maxed out delivers only edge-of-breakup crunch, nowhere near the original's liquid sustain. Cranking gain to 10, cutting bass from original's 6 to 4 (AC15 gets flubby), and boosting mid to 7 compensates for the Vox's natural treble peak. Rolling tone knob to 7 on your GRG170DX tames the ceramic humbucker's harshness. A TS-style pedal is non-negotiable here — it provides the mid-hump and compression the AC15 cannot produce alone.

PRO TIPFor the solo's singing sustain, stand close to the amp and angle your guitar toward the speaker cone to encourage controlled feedback on held notes — this mimics the infinite sustain Gates gets from his high-gain rig.
