I pushed mids to 7 to compensate for the MG's natural mid-scoop and kept bass at 4 to prevent flubby low-end on the small speaker. Gain at 7 on OD1 gives the tightest articulation this amp offers—OD2 gets too fizzy for note clarity. Without pedals, you cannot fully replicate the studio compression and thickness; a tubescreamer-style pedal (Boss SD-1, ~$50) in front would dramatically improve note definition.
