Original rig

Jim Root: Fender Jim Root Telecaster (EMG 81 bridge) into Orange Rockerverb 100 MKII. Mick Thomson: Ibanez MTM1 (Seymour Duncan Blackouts) into Rivera KR7 blended with Marshall JCM800, boosted by Maxon OD820. Both tracked rhythm parts.

01High-Gain Distortion (e.g. Boss MT-2 Metal Zone, Revv G3, TC Electronic Dark Matter)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for this tone; the Tone Master Deluxe Reverb cannot produce high-gain saturation from its preamp. A Metal Zone or similar scooped-mid distortion pedal is the gain source.

02Noise Gate (e.g. Boss NS-2, ISP Decimator)

RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Slipknot's tight palm-muted riffs require a gate to kill string noise between chops.

Threshold 6 · Decay 3
Why these settings

The original uses 100+ watt high-gain tube heads (Orange Rockerverb, Rivera KR7) with active humbuckers. Your Tone Master Deluxe Reverb is a clean Fender platform with zero high-gain capability — it maxes out at edge-of-breakup blues crunch. The amp must stay clean (gain 3) as a pedal platform; ALL saturation must come from an external high-gain distortion pedal. Your Strat's single coils are 30-40% lower output than the original's EMG 81s, so the pedal gain compensates (+1 vs what a humbucker would need), and treble is reduced by 2 to avoid ice-pick harshness.

PRO TIPFor the percussive palm-mute attack, anchor your picking hand firmly on the bridge saddles and strike with the thick part of the pick at a steep angle — the chunk comes from precise right-hand muting pressure, not just gain.
