Why these settings

The Frontman 15R is a small solid-state practice amp with limited gain and a bright, thin voice—the opposite of Root's massive tube Riveras with EMG actives. The Starcaster's passive humbuckers have lower output than EMGs, so gain is maxed. Mid is scooped to approximate the modern metal character but kept at 4 (not lower) because the Frontman lacks low-end authority. A Tube Screamer in front is non-negotiable for this tone—it tightens the flubby bass and adds the mid-push the Frontman cannot produce alone.

PRO TIPPalm mute HARD and pick directly over the bridge pickup pole pieces with the fleshy part of your palm touching the strings right at the saddles—this is where Slipknot's percussive chunk lives. The Frontman will compress and fart out if you hit too hard on open chugs, so control your attack dynamics.
