01Tube Screamer style overdrive (TS9 / TS Mini / Joyo Vintage OD)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Essential for tightening low-end and adding mid presence. A $30 Joyo Vintage Overdrive gets you 80% there.
02Noise Gate (Boss NS-2 / Donner Noise Killer)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. Critical for silencing hum between palm-muted chugs. Without this, the Frontman's hiss will bleed through.
The Frontman 15R is a small solid-state practice amp with limited gain and a bright, thin voice—the opposite of Root's massive tube Riveras with EMG actives. The Starcaster's passive humbuckers have lower output than EMGs, so gain is maxed. Mid is scooped to approximate the modern metal character but kept at 4 (not lower) because the Frontman lacks low-end authority. A Tube Screamer in front is non-negotiable for this tone—it tightens the flubby bass and adds the mid-push the Frontman cannot produce alone.
