01Marshall Shredmaster or Boss DS-1 (distortion)
RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. The Shredmaster is discontinued; a Boss DS-1 or ProCo RAT gets you 80% there. This pedal is ESSENTIAL for the chorus crunch — the Crate's onboard distortion lacks the thick, compressed saturation of the original.
The Crate GX-15 is a solid-state practice amp with limited headroom and a harsher distortion character than the original Fender tube clean. I've set gain low (3) to keep the clean tone as pure as possible for verses. Mid pushed to 6 compensates for the Crate's naturally scooped voice versus the Fender's warmer mids. Without a distortion pedal, you cannot authentically recreate the chorus — the amp's built-in overdrive will sound fizzy and thin compared to the Shredmaster's thick crunch.
