RECOMMENDED — not currently owned. This is essential for the Purple Rain solo tone. Prince used the DS-1 as his primary dirt source. Without it, push the amp gain to 9 and accept a less saturated, less compressed result.

Why these settings

The GA-15 is a small practice amp without a dedicated distortion channel, so you must push gain hard to approximate the saturated Mesa Mark IIC+ tone. Your Strat's single coils are brighter and lower output than Prince's MadCat with DiMarzios — roll tone knob to 6 to tame the ice-pick highs, and I boosted mids to 7 (vs typical Fender scoop) to get that vocal midrange bark. Without a DS-1, you lose the compressed sustain that defines this solo.

PRO TIPPrince's secret weapon on this solo is his vibrato technique — wide, slow, and deliberate, applied after letting notes bloom. Dig in hard on the attack, then ease off and let the sustain sing. Work the volume knob for swells on the emotional peaks around the 6-minute mark.
